Preparing an income tax return is easier when your records tell the same story. For a salaried employee, independent professional or business owner in Gurugram, the useful first step is to list every income source and identify the year being filed. Your residential location alone does not determine the return form or tax treatment.

Start with the year and your income sources

Tell your adviser whether you are preparing an original return, reviewing a previous filing or responding to a specific issue. Include salary from every employer, bank interest, rental receipts, investment sales, business income and any overseas income or assets. Mention a job change, property sale or change in residential status at the outset.

Keep a separate folder for each year. A document labelled only ‘tax return’ can easily be confused with another period; use a consistent year and document name instead.

Build your document folder

  • Identity and previous filing: PAN details, relevant identity information and the previous return acknowledgement.
  • Employment: employer-issued salary and tax-deduction certificates for the relevant year, payslips and settlement details if you changed jobs.
  • Banking: statements, interest certificates and details of accounts relevant to the return.
  • Investments and property: transaction statements, purchase and sale records, rental agreements and loan-interest records where relevant.
  • Business or freelance work: invoices, expense evidence, books and tax-deduction records.
  • Claims: evidence for any exemption or deduction you want the adviser to evaluate. A payment does not automatically qualify for tax relief.

Compare records before accepting pre-filled figures

Review the Annual Information Statement (AIS) against your own records. The Income Tax Department explains that AIS may not contain every transaction, so a missing entry is not a reason to leave income out of a return. Record unexplained differences and discuss the appropriate correction or feedback process.

Use the annual tax statement applicable to the period: the Department identifies Form 26AS for periods up to AY 2026–27 and Form 168 from Tax Year 2026–27 onwards. Avoid mixing statements for different years.

Agree the scope before filing

Ask which return form and regime apply to your facts, what is included in the fee, which records are missing and who will complete the required verification. Review the computation and final return before submission. Keep the acknowledgement and supporting working papers together.

For clients around Sector 52, Gurugram, Tax Prime Services can help organise the filing discussion and review the agreed records. Confirm the meeting address before visiting. For an initial enquiry, share your income categories and year—not passwords, OTPs or identity documents.

Common questions

Does living in Gurugram require a separate local ITR?

Income tax is a national system. The appropriate return depends on your income, status and the rules for the relevant period, rather than a separate Gurugram return.

Is an employer certificate enough?

It may not cover bank interest, investments, rent or other income. Tell your adviser about all income sources before the return is prepared.
